Statement on the Latest Fatal Shooting in Minneapolis
Standing for justice, truth and the safety of all beloved children of God
We are deeply saddened and troubled by the recent fatal shooting of a Minneapolis resident by federal immigration agents during an enforcement operation. According to local and national reports, 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen and intensive care nurse, was shot and killed by federal officers in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026. Federal authorities assert the man approached agents with a firearm and that “defensive shots” were fired, while multiple independent eyewitness accounts and video evidence raise serious questions about whether a clear threat was present at the time of the shooting.
This tragic loss of life follows another fatal shooting earlier this month in Minneapolis, when an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good, an unarmed mother whose death has been officially ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.
Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and community members grieving these losses. These incidents have sparked widespread sorrow, anger, and calls for justice as well as peaceful protests and demands for greater clarity about what happened and why.
We urge all public officials and law enforcement agencies to:
• Ensure a full, transparent, and independent investigation into both shootings, with all evidence made available for public review.
• Prioritize de-escalation and community safety in all enforcement actions.
• Rebuild trust with communities affected by immigration enforcement and federal law enforcement operations.
Every life has value, and communities deserve accountability and truth when force is used.
We join many in calling for calm, justice and meaningful change.
