Mars Hill United Methodist Church participates in missions of the broader United Methodist Church. Our members are involved weekly in Neighbors in Need in Madison County; Haywood Street Clothing Closet, and the Haywood Street Congregation serving the homeless in Asheville.

Your Mars Hill Community Connections

The congregation hosts chapters of Alcoholics Anonymous and narcotics anonymous, a local Boy Scouts of America Troop, a Madison County 4-h club and the Church Mice artists.

Church reaches Mars Hill community

A story by Lance Hickey featured in the Weaverville Tribune

Mars Hill United Methodist Church proved to be a uniquely inviting congregation. With both a traditional and contemporary presentation style, the church offers services to all age groups. The congregation’s and Pastor Hartzog’s enthusiasm for the church and community was obvious. Mars Hill United Methodist Church continues to leave its stamp on the Mars Hill community.

An open letter to our LGBTQ+ siblings and their allies

From Sacred Witness Western North Carolina

LGBTQ FriendlyMethodist

United Methodist pastors, church leaders, and laity in the Western North Carolina Conference wrote to acknowledge the harm done recently by the global gathering of the United Methodist Church known as General Conference.

They say to our LGBTQ+ siblings: “you are beloved children of God, and you are beloved by us.” This action of the General Conference does not reflect our own hopes and dreams for The United Methodist Church. More importantly, we believe that it does not reflect the hopes and dreams of God.

The letter included 1,250 signatures from beloveds across the Western North Carolina District and was presented to Bishop Leeland by ten clergy and one lay person. After listening carefully, Bishop Leeland acknowledged the hurt some feel when they repeatedly hear they are not fully received into the life of the church, while also recognizing there were those of sincere conviction who feel differently. All conceded the conference, and the entire denomination, represents a divided house. The meeting ended with prayer for our laity, clergy, congregations, and denomination.

Praying for Annual Conference

The Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church will hold its Annual Conference Meeting June 20-23

We ask that you pray for discernment in the election of delegates to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences of the United Methodist Church. If you are struggling with what to pray, consider the prayer Reconciling Ministries Network's Helen Ryde prayed as she visited churches on her way to General Conference 2019:

Holy God,
May every LGBTQ+ person who has ever been baptized, confirmed, attended or served the United Methodist Church know how fearfully and wonderfully they are made. And may the Western North Carolina Conference reflect this love in every way.

      You are not alone.

UMC Next is a newly formed grassroots movement working toward a hope-filled future for the global Methodist movement.  A national gathering was convened in May with at least 10 representatives from each Annual Conference. For this movement to continue, we need YOU.

On Wednesday, June 19th at 6:00pm we will gather in that same spirit of holy conferencing.  Come, hear more about what took place at UMC Next.
